The paper by Katsunori Tanaka (completed the Master’s program in FY2022) has been accepted by Physics of Fluids.

[Kanagawa, T. and Tanaka, K., “Effect of liquid-phase Reynolds stress on weakly nonlinear pressure waves in bubbly flows,” Physics of Fluids, Vol. 38 (2026), in press.]

Theories that predict how pressure waves propagate through bubbly flows have, until now, been built on the premise that the liquid phase is laminar. On the other hand, the liquid phase is normally turbulent, as one need hardly recall hydraulic machinery to see.

This paper answers the question: does the propagation of a pressure wave change depending on whether the liquid phase is turbulent or laminar? The result was that the way the wave travels is almost unchanged whether turbulence is present or not, the difference being no more than a few percent. The reason is that a pressure wave is far faster than the turbulence. In the time an eddy takes to turn once around, the wave has long since passed by, and the eddy has no spare moment to hand anything over to the wave.

This result also has practical significance. If one tries to take turbulence into account, several quantities that must be fixed by experiment become necessary, and for turbulent bubbly flow these have not been determined. Now that turbulence has been found not to matter, that troublesome work can be dispensed with. This means that a theory used for half a century has, for the first time, been given the backing to say that it may be used.

It should be added that in a liquid where the bubbles are densely packed, the story changes and turbulence does take effect. Where it begins to take effect has also been shown in this study.
